Weather can have significant effects on our mood. Living in a climate with four seasons, not to mention the extreme fluctuations in weather patterns these days, can make us even more prone to weather related highs and lows. The connection between mood and weather conditions is well studied and we know that this connection is REAL. Weather can influence how we feel.

Here’s the good and the bad:

Sunny days give us a boost in serotonin (serotonin is often associated with feelings of well-being and happiness). And, bonus – sunlight can help to regulate sleep, too! Our social behaviour is activated on sunny days as well. We are more likely to go out, spend time with others outdoors and get active. All of these things are natural mood boosters.

Cloudy days can disrupt circadian rhythyms because our exposure to natural light is reduced. This can lead to low mood and low energy levels. During gloomy days, we are more likely to crave sleep and rest. Light deprivation is “a thing”!

Windy or Stormy days can be incredibly difficult for those with sensory related sensitivities. The sound and unpredictability of thunder, lightening and wind can increase anxiety and cause distress.

Next time you are feeling down, look outside. If it’s gloomy out there, you could very well be experiencing weather-related blues. Self soothing measures such as a warm beverage (or, cold icy one), scented candle or aromatherapy in a uplifting scent or soft lighting can provide a boost.

While we can’t control the weather, we can try to minimize the disruption it can cause. Increasing awareness to environmental factors and how they can influence us can provide us with knowledge to tackle those pesky mood changes when they present.
